Possibly ANOTHER Phony Lifelong Republican

Barack Obama was campaigning in Ohio making a speech on Education. According to this blog, he was introduced to the crowd by one Gregory Tucker from Centerville:

Then Gregory Tucker from Centerville came out to introduce Obama. He talked about his high school son and how he had coached the son’s team in a science build competition. Then he told everyone he was a lifelong Republican who was voting for Obama because he had a vision for the future.

Well, according to the Ohio voter registration records, he voted in the following elections:

2008 PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY
2007 NOV GENERAL
2006 NOV GENERAL
2005 MAY PRIMARY
2004 GEN PRESIDENTIAL

And he is a registered Democrat who has NEVER voted as a Republican before!

This is his voting record: ,,,,,,,,,,,,X,,X,,,,X,,,X,,D

(again, obviously "D" stand for Democrat, but i do not know what the "X" stands for or all those commas)

Now, if he was a lifelong Republican, you'd think he'd have quite a few R's before that "D"

And according to Newsmeat, he donated 500 bucks to the Obama primary campaign way back in March 2007:

Tucker, Gregory J

Not employed/Student OBAMA, BARACK (D)
President
OBAMA FOR AMERICA $500

Comments:
Hi. I saw your blog about my speech and felt I needed to respond concerning your comments. I have certainly been a lifelong Republican. With the exception of Ross Perot in 1992, I have voted for the Republican presidential candidate in every election since I became eligible in 1980. I do not vote straight ticket and have supported Democratic candidates for Congressional campaigns in the past based on their positions and records. I only registered as a Democrat in March of this year to be able to vote for Obama in the Ohio primary.

With regard to the $500 contribution you note from March 2007, that was a contribution I made on behalf of my son who was invited by my brother-in-law to attend a dinner with Barack Obama. The contribution is in my name because my son (16 years old then) could not make the payment himself. I did not actually start supporting the Obama campaign until early 2008 after looking at the candidates the Republicans had to offer.

I hope this helps clarify the situation. Given how politics works today, there are probably some phony claims out there, but I am certainly not one of them.

Greg Tucker

Well, thanks for the clarification, Greg.

"I do not vote straight ticket and have supported Democratic candidates for Congressional campaigns in the past based on their positions and records. I only registered as a Democrat in March of this year to be able to vote for Obama in the Ohio primary."

But telling people you "was a lifelong Republican", months after you had registered as Democrat? I mean that can be taken a couple of ways. "Was" can mean past tense, but it also can be read as "still" a republican. If you meant in the past tense sense, you gave some people the impression that you still are.

And supporting Democrat (congressional) candidates before, I can understand that the local Republican candidates are sometimes not to your liking. But to me, while you may have been a registered Republican at the time, its hardly the actions of a "lifelong" republican.

"With regard to the $500 contribution you note from March 2007, that was a contribution I made on behalf of my son who was invited by my brother-in-law to attend a dinner with Barack Obama."

I dont know whether or not thats allowed, making contributions in other peoples names. I'm PROBABLY wrong on that, the campaign finance laws are so murky. DON'T want to alarm you.
